Ferromex (Reporting Mark FXE)  a contraction of ferrocarril mexicano or mexican railroad is a private rail consortium that operates the largest ( by mileage ) railroad in mexico.

Ferromex began operating on 19 February 1998, following the privatization of the vast majority of the government-owned railroads at the same time president of mexico ernesto zedillo ponce de leon. the ferromex system operates a little more than  5,300 mile (8.500 km) of track and interconnects 5 major inland mexican cities, 5 cities down the border in the U.S. four seaports upon the pacific ocean and an extra upon the gulf of mexico. nowadays, grupo mexico owns 74% and Union Pacific Railroad corporation owns 26% of the corporate, respectively.

Ferromex hosts the Ferrocarril Chihuahua Al Pacífico Chepe Railroad, a tourist line that runs in the copper canyon. Ferromex additionally operates the tequila categorical, that runs from guadalajara, jalisco to actually a tequila distillery in Amatitán, Jalisco.

In November 2005, Grupo Mexico, owner of Ferromex purchased infraestructura y transportes Ferroviarios, the parent company of Ferrosur, another of Mexicos Class I Railroads, within the US$309 million stock transaction. The Mexican Federal Competition Commission (CFC) had rejected a proposed 2002 merger of Ferromex and Ferrosur amid opposition from Ferromex competitor, grupo Transportación Ferroviaria Mexicana (TFM).

Following the November 2005 purchase of Ferrosur by Grupo Mexico, Kansas City Southern de México (KCSM), successor to actually TFM, petitioned the mexican government to actually block the merger of ferrosur and ferromex. the cfc rejected the merger in June 2006 stating that the merger would have led to actually excessive concentration within the whole railroad trade onto the detriment of shoppers and competing shippers. though, in March 2011, a tribunal ruled in grupo mexicos favor, and of course the merger was permitted.
